Jennifer Aniston is nominated for an Emmy for the first time in 11 years after getting a nod for The Morning Show
Jennifer Aniston gained a nod for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series during Tuesday morning’s Emmy Awards nomination announcements.
The 51-year-old was recognized for her work as TV anchor Alex Levy in the AppleTV+ drama series The Morning Show.
It marked the Friends star’s first nomination in 11 years.
The Morning Show, which explores the challenges faced by the people who work in morning television, also stars Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell and Billy Crudup.
Aniston has already garnered critical acclaim for her role as Levy, a successful morning news anchor who is left to fend for herself after her co-host Mitch Kessler (Carell) is fired following sexual misconduct allegations.
In The Guardian‘s review of the show, reviewer Stuart Heritage wrote that ‘to watch Aniston on The Morning Show is to resent Friends for robbing us of a truly incredible dramatic actor.’
In total, The Morning Show garnered five nominations for the 2020 Emmys, including Lead Actor for Carell and Supporting actor for Crudup.
However co-star and Executive Producer Witherspoon was not recognized for her contributions.
Aniston was last recognized by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences -the body that runs the awards- in 2009 for her guest spot on a 30 Rock episode.
The ex-wife of Brad Pitt was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series after playing Claire, who enjoys a fling with Jack Donaghey (Alec Baldwin) before turning dangerously clingy.
She has a total of 7 Primetime Emmy noms, for one win.
That win came in 2002, for her iconic role of Rachel Green in the sitcom mega-hit, Friends.
Dystopian drama Watchmen and comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel led nominations on Tuesday for the Emmy Awards, the highest awards in television.
Watchmen is the leading contender with 26 nominations. The HBO series stars Regina King and is a superhero drama dealing with race, police and white supremacy based on a 1980s graphic novel.
The Amazon comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the second most-nominated series with 20, followed by Netflix’s Ozark with 18.
Former Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones unveiled the nominations in a live-stream, kicking off an unusual awards season clouded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Emmy Awards are set to take place September 20 and will likely also be a virtual event because of the pandemic.
