Emma Watson coins phrase ‘self-partnered’ as she describes being ‘very happy’ single

Emma Watson has coined her own term for being single by describing herself as “self-partnered”. The actress was discussing the pressures of turning 30 and having a picture-perfect life as she unveiled the new phrase. In an interview with Vogue, Watson said she has never believed the “’I’m happy single’ spiel.” “It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single] – I call it being self-partnered’, she said.

The star’s new term seemed to be a nod towards Gwyneth Paltrow’s “conscious uncoupling” phrase used to describe her divorce from Chris Martin in 2014. Watson, who turns 30 in April, said the pressure to have a husband and a baby by the time she reaches the milestone had left her feeling anxious.

“I was like, ‘Why does everyone make such a big fuss about turning 30? This is not a big deal,’ cut to 29, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I feel so stressed and anxious,’” she told Vogue.

“If you have not built a home, if you do not have a husband, if you do not have a baby, and you are turning 30, and you’re not in some incredibly secure, stable place in your career, or you’re still figuring things out… there’s just this incredible amount of anxiety.” But the actress said she has now come to terms with it.

Watson, who rose to fame when she starred as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, has previously said she prefers not to date famous people “I don’t think it’s fair that, all of a sudden, intimate details of their personal life are public as a direct result of me. I wish I could protect them,” she told Elle Australia.
