During Chloe Moretz’s recent appearence on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the 21-year-old actress revealed that she fibbed a little to land her role in Scorsese’s Hugo. Currently, the Kicka*s alum has a new movie coming out, The Miseducation Of Cameron Post, a film she’s in the middle of promoting.
Moretz said, “I lied to a pretty heavy hitter,” and that she was “supposed to have a British accent and be British,” so she went in there and “lied” – all for the role.
According to the 21-year-old, she and her brother always faked British accents when they were growing up, so she already had a bit of experience with imitating inflections.
Fortunately, the casting director recognized her and knew right away that she wasn’t British, but rather than telling her to tell the truth, the casting director told her, “Lie to Marty, and work,” and so she did.
It might be one of the few occasions where outright lying in a job interview actually works out. In case you haven’t seen it, Scorsese’s Hugo was one of the best films of the year in 2011, receiving a total of 11 Academy Award nominations, winning five.
Hugo won Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects. Scorsese also won his third Golden Globe Award for Best Director.
However, the film was a commercial failure, despite critics adoring it, and it currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Interestingly, the movie is one of Martin’s only films to be described by analysts as a commercial failure, but the movie still lived up to critics’ expectations of Scorsese productions, which typically do well both commercially and critically.
