Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon weigh in on the possibility of a third season for ‘Big Little Lies;
At the outset, “Big Little Lies” was planned to run for just one season. Its ending seemed finite, too, in part because it was based on the novel by Liane Moriarty. But as Nicole Kidman told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview alongside her co-star and co-executive producer, Reese Witherspoon, they felt there were still enough stories to be told about the characters that a second season was warranted. Whether a third season could work, too, remains to seen — and in their chat with EW, both Nicole and Reese made it clear they’re open to bringing the so-called “Monterey 5” back. Asked about the open-ended aspects of the Season 2 finale, Nicole explained: “It’s so important not to discuss all of the intricacies of this, because if we do a season 3, there’s going to be things that will be explained. It’s probably better to allow just a little mystery. I know the voracious appetite for knowledge and to leave no stone unturned. But I’m always going to fight for just a little bit…there can be a few mysteries and secrets held intact.” Reese agreed. “If there are conversations still to be had, I think that’s really what determines if we can tell a season 3,” she said. “Is it as good as season 1 and 2? Does the audience still have questions? Do we have answers?” Ultimately, Nicole said the decision will be an all-hands on deck situation. “It’s a collaboration. We work as a group,” she said. “We are incredibly tight; we talk to each other, and we are on each other’s side. So, we will decide as a group. We listen to the way in which people react because so much of TV is a very immediate medium. Every single person who has made this has said this show is bigger than any single one of us.”
