Charlize Theron weighs in on Golden Globes’ all-male best director nominees controversy
Add Charlize Theron to the growing chorus of voices speaking out about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s failure to include any women directors in the 2020 Golden Globes Best Director category. “It’s tough. It’s really, really tough,” Charlize, who is up for a Globe for her performance in “Bombshell,” told the Los Angeles Times this week. “And I think it gets really frustrating when we have to remember that women directors, especially, are just trying to get their numbers up. They represent ten percent of our directors in the industry, and when you have a good year like we had this year with such great work, it is incredibly frustrating,” she continued. Greta Gerwig and Lorena Scafaria, who directed Globe-nominated performances in “Little Women” and “Hustlers,” respectively, have both been at the top of many critics’ ‘Globes snubs’ lists. “No woman wants to get nominated because it’s ‘the right thing to do.’ It’s really, really ridiculous,” Charlize added. “It’s not cool. It’s really hard, and I think it’s unfair, and it’s why we can’t stop this fight. We gotta keep making noise until we’re heard and these stories get recognized.” The 2020 Golden Globes air Jan. 5.
