With the Fourth of July holiday, hopefully you have an extra day or two off this weekend. And, in our opinion, there’s no better way to spend an additional bit of free time than to discover some TV. So in lieu of cookouts and fireworks (or for after they’ve already exhausted you), check out some of the best shows that recently dropped on Netflix. Read on for our recommendations.
1Sex/Life
This spicy romantic drama has been the talk of Netflix subscribers since it dropped and for good reason. Sex/Life, which is about a suburban mom who shares her memories of her wild former life with her current husband, more than earns an adults-only rating. Shakespeare it’s not, but if you’re looking for something salacious, this is for you.
2Young Royals
Already blow through the most recent season of Elite? Then you should give this new Swedish boarding school drama a try. Young Royals is about a rebellious teen prince who makes some new discoveries about himself when he’s sent off to get straightened out.
3Sophie: A Murder in West Cork
A new entry into the Netflix true crime documentary canon, Sophie: A Murder in West Cork explores the case of French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, who was found murdered near her holiday cottage in Ireland. The series goes into the impact that the brutal killing had on the quiet town, the way the mystery became international news, and what has led many to believe that an English journalist is still the most plausible suspect.
4Grey’s Anatomy
Grey’s Anatomy is a train that cannot be stopped. The 17th season of the medical drama that fans just can’t quit comes to Netflix on Saturday, July 3. As you may have heard, the largely COVID-themed episodes see the return of several deceased fan-fave characters as Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) finds herself on the brink of death in a dream-like state.
5The A List
Netflix picked up this British supernatural teen drama when it was canceled by the BBC, and now the Netflix-only second season has arrived. The A-List takes place in a mystifying locale called Peregrine Island, which is home to a teen summer camp—among other things. Amid romances and backstabbings and budding friendships, the kids are also left to grapple with some pretty inexplicable stuff, all of which seems to center around one glamorous and wrathful camper.
6The Parisian Agency: Exclusive Properties
There’s nothing wrong with spending your weekend salivating over digs you could never afford. Enter The Parisian Agency: Exclusive Properties, a reality series about a family-run real estate agency that serves the highest-end French clientele.
7The Mole
For a blast from the past, revisit The Mole, the reality competition show hosted by none other than Anderson Cooper. (For its first two seasons at least.) Here’s the gist: contestants complete missions that add more money to the prize that only one of them will eventually win. All the while, there’s a preordained traitor in their midst, and the contestant who knows the least about “the mole” at the end of each episode is given the boot.
