Supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid are among a slew of celebrities weighing in on the escalating conflict in the Middle East — using their social media accounts to express support for the Palestinians.
The Hadids, who are half Palestinian and half Dutch but were born in the US, have long supported their motherland and doubled down on the sentiments in recent Instagram posts this week.
Between Tuesday and Wednesday, Bella Hadid has made over a dozen posts on her story and on her Instagram page in support of the Palestinians’ plight, using the hashtag “Free Palestine.”
“If you don’t think this is wrong, regardless of who you are and where you come from, there is a problem with how you see humanity and Palestinians. This is on you. Not them,” Bella Hadid wrote in a caption alongside a post that detailed issues Palestinians face, including ubiquitous checkpoints, evictions and restrictions of food, water and necessities.
“I have a lot to say about this but for now, please read and educate yourself. This is not about religion. This is not about spewing hate on one or the other. This is about Israeli colonization, ethnic cleansing, military occupation and apartheid over the Palestinian people that has been going on for YEARS!” she wrote in another post.
Gigi Hadid made a number of similar postings, mostly resharing what her sister had, but also posted a photo of her father Mohamed Hadid’s passport. The real estate tycoon, who now lives in California, was born in Palestine and his passport shows that as his birthplace. Gigi Hadid showed it off in response to critics saying the locale doesn’t exist.
Dua Lipa, the crooner who is dating the Hadid sisters’ brother Anwar Hadid, shared the #SaveSheikhJarrah hashtag on her Instagram Stories over the weekend in reference to a neighborhood in Jerusalem that is home to many Palestinians who are facing evictions, Newsweek reported.
Other celebrities have also weighed in.
The Weeknd shared artwork on his Instagram Story with the missive “protect Jerusalem” in support of Palestinians who’ve been displaced, the outlet reported.
“Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey, who played Cersei Lannister in the hit HBO series, shared an image of a Palestinian girl waving a flag. The graphic included the words “Save Sheikh Jarrah” and “Zionist Israel Apartheid.”
And musician Roger Waters posted a video on Twitter last week clearly spelling out his support for the Palestinians. “It’s official ISRAEL is an APARTHEID STATE,” he wrote.
